Water is needed by the body. Its deficiency can cause many types of problems. Therefore doctors recommend drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water every day. However, one should also avoid drinking too much water. It is dangerous to drink a lot of water at once. Last year in August itself, a woman had died due to drinking too much water.
Health experts say that one should always drink water as per the need of the body. Drinking more or less water can harm health. Know what can happen due to drinking too much water i.e. water intoxication…
Drinking too much water during excessive playing or intense training is called water intoxication. This may cause confusion, headache, nausea and vomiting. In rare cases, water causes swelling in the brain, which can be dangerous. Due to this, brain function may get disrupted.
This can increase the amount of water in the blood. Due to which the electrolytes in the blood may become diluted, i.e. sodium may become diluted. This problem is called hyponatremia.
The body needs water to function properly, but if too much water is consumed then the problem may increase. Actually, our kidneys can expel only 0.8 to 1.0 liters of water from the body every hour. When drinking a lot of water at once, the electrolyte balance can get disturbed.
The function of sodium is to balance the fluids inside and outside the cells. When you drink too much water, sodium levels drop and fluids go inside the cells, causing swelling. When this happens to brain cells it can be fatal.
Water intoxication can cause lethargy, muscle weakness or cramps, high blood pressure, double vision, difficulty in breathing. The accumulation of fluid in the brain is called cerebral edema, which can affect the brain system. In severe cases it can cause seizures, brain damage, coma and even death.
